The eighth Guangzhou Marathon is coming soon. In 2012, Guangzhou Marathon was first launched and certified by CAA as the A level event. Since 2014, Guangzhou Marathon was recognized as the CAA Gold Medal Race for four consecutive years. The year of 2018 has seen this event was upgraded as IAAF Gold Label Road Race after it was awarded as IAAF Bronze and Silver Label Road Race successively in 2016 and 2017. All there cognition suggests that Guangzhou Marathon has become a leading marathon in China. Besides the organizers, runners also witness the growth of the event.Among all the contestants this year, the large number of foreigners attract my attention, some of which have participated in Guangzhou Marathon for several times. As an international metropolis, Guangzhou is home to people from all over the world. Tens of thousands of foreigners now study, work and even start families in this city. Why do they come to Guangzhou, how do they fall in love with running, and what are their stories with Guangzhou Marathon? Let’s find out.

Hwang Kyung-sil, South Korea, Cosmetic Industry

Kyung-sil came to the interview in training kit. Sensing my confusion, she explained with a smile: “I’m going to the gym right after the interview.” She is really a fitness enthusiast, for if time permits she will exercise for at least five times a week.

Hwang Kyung-sil comes from Seoul, South Korea. Six years ago, she gave up her job as a teacher in South Korea, and came to China for opportunities. Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Qingdao… She went to many cities, and finally came to Guangzhou at a friend’s suggestion. Quite unexpectedly, she found it a quite liveable city, “with a warm climate all year around and delicious food causing me to put on 10 kg a year.”

During the six years in Guangzhou, Hwang Kyung-sil witnesses the rise of running culture in China. Even today she still exclaims at the speed at which public enthusiasm for running grows in China, which is completely different from South Korean’s gradual accumulation. 3 years ago, she joined Adidas Runners, a running club organized by Adidas. Starting from dozens of people, the club expanded into hundreds in 2 years, “more than the maximum of a WeChat group”. Every week, Hwang Kyung-sil will take part in several training sessions, including 5-8 km running in downtown during weekdays and 10-20 km in suburb on the weekend.

Marathon is the touchstone for every long-distance running lover. Hwang Kyung-sil’s first encounter with marathon dated back to two decades ago, when she took part in the mini-marathon held in Seoul. The story goes on after she comes to China. 10 km, 21 km, and finally, she completed the first 42.195 km in Beijing Marathon last year. The record doesn’t really matter to her, because “completing the course is the biggest success.”

Marathon is more than just running. Hwang Kyung-sil responded actively to every opportunities of marathon. “Marathon gives me the chance to explore the wider world”, she has walked a long distance on this path. Both the magnificence of Ti an an men Square and the beautiful landscape of Qingyuan are imprinted on her memories.

“Undoubtedly, marathon is a physically demanding sport. She used to wonder why there would be some people willing to run for hours without a stop. Now, her personal experiences have offered her an answer. “During long-distance running, people will experience extreme fatigue. But if you can get over it, you will feel that physical fatigue no longer matters, and mental peace is achieved. That’s when all my ideas pop up in my mind, and that’s a perfect opportunity for me to reflect on myself.”

Tom Kemp, the United Kingdom, Teacher

If Hwang Kyun-sil came to Guangzhou after deliberation, Tom Kemp’s story with Guangzhou started quite coincidentally. He grew up in Bath, a small English town with a population of 100 thousand.Although not far from London, Bath is a quite traditional place. In the eyes of most, China was just an exotic place on books or television, and few of Tom’s friends ever set foot on the foreign soil. Specializing in history, Tom didn’t have a clear plan for his future after graduation. At his mother’s suggestion, Tom earned a TEFL certificate and looked for jobs worldwide. He received an offer from Guangzhou, a city he hadn’t even heard of before. “All I knew was that it was close to Hong Kong.”

Probably out of curiosity, Tom came to Guangzhou in 2012. Looking back at the 7 years, Tom finds it hard to believe. “For me, Guangzhou is home.” It is in this city once strange to him that he has a family of his own, finds a stable and decent job, and gets to establish a new social circle. He has fully adapted to the life here, loving the warm climate, while also enjoying the safe environment and slow rhythm.“The strange thing is that I will feel uneasy when I visit my relatives and friends back in Britain.”

A week before the interview, Tom went to Singapore with his family for a marathon. Since the first half marathon in Bath15 years ago, this is the ninth marathon and the third full marathon. For Tom,marathon is a goal which he can plan for and work hard to achieve. “We all know that it’s important to keep healthy, but without a clear goal we may easily lose motivation. It seems that you are running a marathon with thousands of people, but the truth is that you are only competing with yourself. There is no end to challenging oneself, and there is end to working for such a goal.”

Quite different from Britain’s long-established marathon culture, when Tom first came to China, he could barely find any marathons to participate in. According to the statistics provided by Chinese Athletics Association, the number of marathons held in China surged from 33 in2012 to 1581 in 2018, which means that nowadays on average 5 marathons are held every day. The reason for the public enthusiasm, Tom believes, lies in people’s mind. “In the past, most people ran for tests, but nowadays they run for themselves.”

Their Stories with Guangzhou Marathon

How many times have you attended Guangzhou Marathon?

Hwang Kyung-sil (H): 2019 included, this will be the fourth time that I set foot on the course of Guangzhou Marathon, also the first full marathon. I really like the course of Guangzhou Marathon, but it’s a pity that I only enjoyed half of it in previous years. I hope I can see more interesting places this time.

Tom (T): I will be attending Guangzhou Marathon for five years in a row. However, considering that I have just completed a full marathon in Singapore, I will run a half marathon this time.

What progress have you felt in Guangzhou Marathon?

H: The event is getting more and more organized and professional. The atmosphere is also getting better. It was a pity that last year I didn’t feel much passion due to the low temperature, and I hope the weather will be better this year.

T: More and more professional, as evidenced by the recognition from IAAF as Gold Label Road Race. I’m also happy to see that the organizers are becoming more rational and serious about the event. I always hold the opinion that people should fully understand the difficulty of the sport. Guangzhou Marathon has set certain requirements on participants’ health and previous results; this reflects their professionalism.

What impresses you most in Guangzhou Marathon?

H: I really enjoy the bustling atmosphere in marathons, and Guangzhou Marathon is great in this aspect. I can see people of all ages and from all walks of life running together. Maybe this is the true meaning of marathon.

T: The first time I attended full marathon in Guangzhou, I failed to reach the goal of finishing within 4 hours. The next year I tried again, and this time when there was only one kilometre left I still got plenty of time. I looked up at the Canton Tower, glanced around the crowds, and enjoyed their cheering. Every marathon runner encounters some obstacles, but moments like this make all my efforts worthwhile.

What do you like most about Guangzhou Marathon?

H: The running medics. The priority for all marathons is security, and Guangzhou Marathon does pay much attention to this. Some runners may pass out or get injured, and the medics will arrive on the scene as soon as possible. This makes us runners reassured.

T: The course. The course of Guangzhou Marathon has been set alongside the Pearl River, during which people can see a lot of interesting spots. Besides, fans are everywhere alongside the course, and their support is really encouraging especially when you are suffering from fatigue and even cramp.

Compared with other marathons you have took part in, is there any room for improvement in Guangzhou Marathon?

H: The luggage storage service can beimproved. Compared with Beijing Marathon, the process in Guangzhou is a littleconfusing. Maybe more volunteers and signs are needed.

T: The organizer of Singapore Marathon provides an app which tracks the position of runners. I think it is useful because friends and relatives of the runners do want to know about their position.

On December 8th, 2019, Guangzhou Marathon will start at Tianhe Stadium. We sincerely wish every runner a satisfactory result, while also appeal to all to walk out to the street and cheer for the runners.
